The US plus-sized retailer Lane Bryant, has taken a swipe at lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret’s beauty standards with its new campaign #I’mNoAngel, which celebrates the beauty of all women.
The new campaign was launched yesterday at the brands New York stores, and it features 8 models proudly showing off their curves next to the racy new campaign images. The black and white ads feature Ashley Graham (who has editorials for Vogue and Love), Justine Legault, Elly Mayday, Marquita Pring, Candice Huffine (who appeared in this year's Pirelli calendar) and Victoria Lee.
The center of the campaign is a message that sexy comes in many shapes and sizes and they are no angels- "Sexy is defined by EVERY woman, not SOME." The campaign aims to prove that all women are sexy regardless of society’s traditional or stereotypical views on beauty. Lane Bryant CEO and President Linda Heasley said in a statement: ‘'Our #ImNoAngel campaign is designed to empower ALL women to love every part of herself’.
The images will appear on television, in print and on public transport.
Campaign’s name ‘#I’mNoAngel’ the photoshoot somewhat unsubtly references Victoria’s Secret’ The Perfect Body ad from last year.
Victoria Secrets ‘Angels’ Lily Aldridge, Behati Prinsloo and Jasmine Tookes were among 10 skinny models who features in the Perfect Body ad and it was heavily citirized on social medial, for both the ad as well as its ability to offer larger sizes or show diverse body types in its advertising. Also, more than 30 000 people signed a petition which forced the company to change the wording to A Body For Everybody. By Contrast, the #I’mNoAngel campaign has received much love on social media.
Fashion industry is increasingly embracing diversity of body-shapes and we love it!
We are real women with real curves and #We’reNoAngels!
